Chennai floods - Update...
- - - - - -
Extreme rain for one full day on Dec 1- Tuesday; it made most of the Chennai lakes reach their capacity and then they were opened.
Opening of Chembarambakkam lake is the curse for people around Tambaram and Madipakkam ! Opening more than 5,000 cusecs will cause trouble. Imagine what will happen if 20,000 to 30,000 cusecs is opened from Chembarambakkam lake??
My wife went to office on Dec 1st & struggled extremely hard to reach back; She first said - she will go to her sister's home in Sanetorium; a kind hearted auto person somehow dropped her about 1 K.M before our house with great, great difficulty ( That was the day it was pouring like anything!)
Situation could have been worst if she is not there around !!
Rain has reduced for the last 2 days; it is raining occasionally & not heavily; but water level is not coming down as many places are having water.
Today took the risk of coming to office; When I saw Velachery, realized Madipakkam is far better.
Came in cycle till Velachery Railway station bridge. Then noway you can go upto Vijayanagar bus terminus. 2 wheeler, cycle, car anything is not permitted to go; only boat service is allowed or you can walk.. Stopped the cycle at station and came by walk. Walking that half kilo meter in knee/ chest height water takes more than 45 minutes.
MRTS train runs from Velachery and hundreds of families from Velachery is vacating and reaching MRTS station to reach to other places.
We were hearing Radio for most of the time; First day -no radio station gave rain related information or help. Then on the second day - Hello FM of Thanthi TV & Radio Mirchi - both gave continuos rain related info/ help. But then they also stopped saying that their phone lines are dead and they cant get information.
There is a Private channel Chennai Live in Radio, who are just announcing some rain related info in English; they are only saying who is stranded where and who needs help.
Like ancient period, we are waiting for morning 6.45 news & evening 6.30 news from All India Radio.
It is sad that All India Radio is not even announcing Help line numbers and other assistance during flood.
The biggest problems now are:
1. Power is not there since Nov 30th at our area. Not sure when it will come. While water is surrounded every where, the water tanks at flats/ houses become empty.
2. Most of the shops are closed for last 3 days. Difficult to get provisions; need to manage with what is available.
3. Phone signals are not available and phones are not working. So even during emergency, you cant contact anybody. You need to rescue yourself.
4. Though not raining, water level is coming down very very slowly.
It seems it will take few more days - atleast till Monday to get back to normalcy ie: Even you think of going to office ( It was a grave mistake to come to office today; will not do it again till Monday; I came to call my parents, brothers, father in law & sister, but land line phones are not working too...)
Friends, kindly do not come out of house, unless the water level is very high in the house; stay safe inside.
This is a very tough time for Chennai, but we will bounce back.

  1. Let us forget about the bad English. He has poured his anguish and has conveyed his experience in moving words.
